Environmentally Friendly Starch-Based Adhesives for Bonding High-Performance Wood Composites: A Review

In recent years, bio-based wood adhesives have gained an increased industrial and research interest as environmentally friendly renewable alternative to the commercial petroleum-based synthetic used in wood-based industry. Due its renewability, abundance, relatively low price, good adhesion properties, starch is a promising natural feedstock for synthesizing composites. This review aims summarize advances developing sustainable starch-based manufacturing non-toxic, low-emission composites with enhanced properties lower environmental impact. Recent developments modification, physical, enzymatic treatments applied improve performance of adhesives, mainly terms improving their water resistance bonding strength, are also outlined discussed.
